Community College Transfer Initiatives
Students completing community college degrees or with other forms of transfer credits may choose any of our pathways or work with an advisor to build a unique course of study, but the following pathways have been designed for particular degrees and programs:
For students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science in Accounting from Reynolds Community College, the “Applications of Accounting” pathway combines BIS Core courses with coursework, minors and/or certificates in at least two of five skill-driven clusters:

Please note that any student along this pathway may tailor their degree beyond the options listed above. Students may also choose from only one of the clusters above if they include accounting courses in their focus area or if they choose two, non-School of Business options included in a cluster (e.g., political science & social welfare).
For students who have earned an Associate’s degree in Human Services and/or are interested in pursuing careers across a range of Human Service positions, this pathway combines BIS Core courses with coursework, minors and/or certificates in at least two of four human service clusters:
- Business & Management: for developing managerial skills for profit, nonprofit, and public enterprises, students could complete coursework or a minor in:
- Health: for developing knowledge of health and wellbeing for employment in hospitals, rehabilitation, counseling, and public settings, student could complete coursework or a minor in:
- Society: for developing knowledge of people and to serve specific communities of people, students could complete coursework or a minor or certificate in:
- Psychology
- Sociology
- African American Studies
- Gender & Sexuality Studies
- Criminal Justice
- Urban & Regional Studies
- Political Science
- Disability Studies
- Communications & Computing: for developing communication and computing skills for profit, nonprofit, and public enterprises, students could complete coursework or a minor or certificate in:

The curriculum is flexible. Students, in consultation with their BIS advisor, can make changes to the recommended courses taken at VCU.
For students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies and are interested in a range of careers related to law, including nonprofit management, political advocacy, corrections, and court reporting, the “Legal Studies” pathway combines:
- B.I.S core courses
- 18 credits from an approved “Legal Studies” list, which could also include relevant coursework from the AAS degree and/or prerequisites for approved “Legal Studies” courses
- Supplemental coursework from any discipline related to individual career goals, such as business, communications, psychology, or many others (selected in coordination with advisor and subject to approval by Associate Director)
For students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science in Management from Reynolds Community College or any college in VCCS, the “Applications of Accounting” pathway combines BIS Core courses with coursework, minors and/or certificates in at least two of five skill-driven clusters:
